I remember right before we went into the 303 Gallery, we were instructed that even if we did not like what we were about to see, we should know that Doug Aitken was one the most important contemporary new media artists around. Such a disclaimer, if you will, made me skeptical, but once inside that cool, dark room, I was pleasantly surprised… and completely blown away. The large-scale 3-screen video installation was pretty spectacular. The sheer size of the screens was enough to take unsuspecting viewers by surprise. And the content of the videos was pretty great, as well. I plopped down on the ground with an interesting angle on all three screens, which made the videos of wild animals in initially immaculate motel rooms all the more interesting. I really want to check out more of Aitken's work and installations.
