Basically across the hall from Bitforms, we met Sara Tecchia and were taken into her little world and namesake exhibit. It was great to hear from the gallery owner about her experiences, exhibitions, and the artists. She had a sophisticated, yet laid back and approachable vibe. She described her gallery's vision as "Beauty… with an edge." And that it was. With all sorts of mixed media, both new and traditional, it seemed like that phrase was the through line for it all. There was shadow graffiti, collage, sand painting, and of course, David Fried's kinetic, sound-activated sphere sculptures. I REALLY want to know how they work. When we had some free time to look around, it was fun rushing off with a few classmates to test the sound-activation of the "Self Organizing Still Life," (click the link for video of a similar Fried installation!) but we certainly could not figure out the secret. I would love to go back to Sara Tecchia and see what they have next.
